As I was driving into work today, traffic was terrible it took me two whole minutes,I saw Robert Rosa sitting against Big 5 sporting goods, a block away from the Church.
Robert is one of the homeless men we work with. I have known him for 5 or 6 years. In all that time I have seen him get worse and worse. He drinks to forget his problems. At one time he worked in the aerospace industry. He was married and has children. His wife cheated on him. His life went right down the tubes because he started drinking to forget. He lost his wife, job and family. Everyday he wakes up and drinks because he is in so much pain. I think it's because he never faced the mess with his ex-wife.
He has been on the streets for close to 20 years.
I talk to him about Christ every time I get the chance to talk to him. He always says he isn't ready , yet.
I'll keep praying for him and I hope you will too.
Anyway, I saw him this morning sitting against a wall reading the newspaper. I actually laughed out loud. I wondered, Was he reading about sports? The comics? I could see the paper from the street and it wasn't the comics, it wasn't the sports either. It was the front page! Was he reading about the election this year? Was he interested in the economy?
There he was, a homeless man wearing 4 hats, dirty clothes, filthy shoes, a long beard and long dirty gray hair.(trust me he is not a clean man) But there he was reading about current events. All I could think was the world is coming to an end...I know it!

Interesting take, I can see the irony of a homeless person who could only be further removed from society if he was on an island reading current events. Perhaps you witnessed the genesis of his reintegration into world. My advice would be to ask him his views on current events. It has probably been a long time since anyone has cared about what he has to think. Good luck Bob.
